Meeting Report - Last Monday

The highlight of the night was an illustrated talk by Max Quinn from NHNZ which he squeezed in between filming in South Australia. He showed excerpts from films mainly in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Thus we saw penguins jumping in and out of holes in the ice, whales getting GPS's attached to them, and big seas. A couple of Polar Bears slipped in as well.

On a technical side he mentioned that interviews now tended to be set with soft light against a black background, all recording was now onto cards. When filming wildlife always keep the camera ready and take plenty of film. He mentioned that his main camera would start recording several seconds before the button was pushed which made it possible to film things that happened unexpectedly.

With 3D recording the effect could be enhanced or reduced by changing the distance the cameras were apart. A difference with 3D was that the viewer had to make a commitment to watch

In the past a wildlife film was about the animals or whatever but now there is more emphasis on people and the wildlife becomes a backstory.

Over the years Max has been a great supporter of the club and we really appreciate the support he has given the club.
 -----------------------------------------------

As the club was embarking on making a drama, Nevill Smith showed his silent film called "The Window Cleaner". Nevill's film was sped up and changed to black and white. Great film.
Andrew Wylie then showed clips of the film he made with Maurice Hayward showing some reluctance in getting up in the morning and then finding it was a holiday!

Gio Angelo talked about the drama and asked for "Expressions of Interest" for the positions of Director. Producer, Actors, Continuity, Camera people, Audio, Editing and lots of other positions. But most of all it needs enthusiasm. The draft script was already written by Gio.

A really good interesting and productive evening.
