Midwinter Meeting

It was a full on meeting with a very good attendance.

The commercial competition was won by Nevill Smith with his "Stolen Rum". It was an excellent film, well acted, well scripted, well edited. Remember, the best rum is Stolen Rum!
Second was Gio Angelo's "3 to Go". The film contained well composed special effects and was  quite special advertising the club's film.
Third, pipped on recount was Wilma Deen's "Come on Over". This was an advertisement for Australian travel and was "blooming" good.
Then came Andrew Wylie's "Wynot Carport". If you are looking for a carport see Andrew. How he made a collection of bits and pieces into such a professional job is one of life's little mysteries. And the film was great as well.

Murray Elston had filmed the polar plunge at St Clair. An excellent documentary. My word what some people do for fun.

"Look up" was shown. This film went viral on You-Tube and put forward the message that you might be missing out on something if you keep your eyes on screens.

The main event on our programme was a film made by the then New Zealand National Film Unit for the 1970 World Expo in Japan. It was screened in the New Zealand Auditorium to promote our country.
This was an outstanding production for its time, made to screen through three projectors on a wide cinemascope screen...it was made  just prior to the video graphic age just a few years before  computer technology swept the world when cinema as we used to know it was at its pinnacle. The film brought to life all aspects of New Zealand  scenic beauty, and a provoking summary of New Zealand Life in the late 1960’s in a series of scenes ranging from the quiet serenity of a Summer holiday to racy sequences of the industrial and farming cultures of the time.
There were no references to our Wine industry, only just hatching at that time; and the absence of O.H.S. was evident in the lack of safety equipment as seen today. There is no doubt the editing and photography would have been by a very talented team.

So that was the night. Thanks to the caterers (attendees) , to Robyn for her Mulled Wine and John and Robyn for providing their lounge.

Meeting 24 June 2012

The meeting was a Pot Luck dinner held at John and Robyn's on a cold and frosty night.

The Competition was "Commercial" and there were 3 entries.
First place to Gio Angelo with "Protecta Field", followed by "Bananas" by Celia Davies, "New Car" by Andrew Wylie and "The Smasher" by Mike Davies.

The theme for part of the evening was "Winter" and a number of films were enjoyed including "Winter Images" by Cecil Bachop, "Snow Warning" by Frank Weedon, two films on clearing railway lines of snow and two winter films by John Armstrong.
Following "Winter" the classic "The Plank" was screened and was very well received. Eric Sykes and a number of well known comedians starred in the film. Sadly Eric has subsequently died aged 89. His career spanned more than 50 years and collaborated on the 1950's radio programme "The Goon Show". Thanks Mike for providing the film.

Mid-Winter Dinner

Last Meeting - Sunday June 26

The meeting was well attended and proved a very enjoyable night. It started with a pot luck meal and there was even a little food left over!

Following on was the "News Item" competition and the winner was Nevill Smith with an extremely well made "Restoration of Larnach's Tomb".

Unfortunately our speaker Celia Davies had lost her voice but husband Mike filled in with an excellent talk on back-packing (budget touring) through a number of countries. Well done Mike.

Wilma Deen and Andrew Wylie then showed some older footage of Mid-Winter carnivals in Dunedin.
It was a good night and the members were reluctant to leave.

A vote of thanks was passed to John and Robyn for their hospitality.

Mid Winter Dinner

The mid winter dinner proved a great success and could become a regular winter activity.
