Report on Meeting 18 March 2013

There was a good attendance at the meeting and it was generally agreed that it was "top draw".

The President (Peter Begg) apologised that Max Quinn could not be with us as he was in Western Australia for a shoot. Hopefully he will be available at the next meeting.

There were four entries in the open competition and these were:-
1st The World Passed By" by Gio Angelo showed the exciting happenings on Hayward's Point Road during a summers day. 2nd "A Bit of Fun" by Yvonne Renton. This showed St Clair's Beach in a whimsical manner. 3rd place went to Gordon Caley with "William Grandson". The 13 year old was interviewed by Gordon then played the piano and saxophone both extremely well. 4th place went to Warren Knox with his "Fair Activity". The film showed highlights of the recently held Lawrence Fair.

The President showed a film Kitty Daisy and Lewis making the point that maybe analogue is not really dead.

Gio Angelo then did a Green-screen demonstration and put Wilma in amongst the crowd on the Mall in London. Pretty cheap way of travelling!
Gio showed us that the technique (sometimes called Chroma Key) is not that difficult provided you avoided wrinkles (in the screen) and good lighting. It is possible to buy suitable material from Spotlight and Digital Green paint is available from Resene.
Most editing software will work but the computer needs some grunt.
Thanks Gio.

Gio then reported on the small survey carried out last month. There certainly was a wish for members to be involved in drama followed by workshops. The committee will be meeting soon to put the proposals into action.

John Armstrong then touched on the problem of Copyright as far as films were concerned. If you make a film and you include copyright music you are breaking the law unless you obtain permission.
What can we do about it?
  • Pay for the use of the music.
  • Write your own music.
  • Use music recorded more than 50 years ago.
  • Use Royalty Free music.
John then demonstrated a couple of sites found after Googling "Royalty Free Music".

A good night.
