Once again pleasing to see a pretty good turn out for our October club
night.
Our competition was own choice up to 5 minutes...the final opportunity to
score in the 2015 year of competition. 2 entries received, both excellent
viewing...only kept apart by one vote!
1st Cannon Studio- Gio Angelo Moments in
Nature A Well made little movie using country views with excellent
use of sophisticated effects...including great scenes taken from a drone...one
of many highlights of this film...which shows perhaps a little of the future
potential of a club such as ours. Great story with excellent commentary.
2nd Nevill Smith Alaska Inside Passage
An awe inspiring look at scenes taken on a recent cruise, showing town
life, beautiful close up scenes of massive glaciers and the ice around them,
with special deep colouration not often seen. This was put together very well
with a good storyline.
Warren Knox’s film which did not work last meeting was shown...a 1997 film
on Akaroa... Warren was a very new club member then, and the Film depicted very
well what little change there was to the village generally, though it could not
show the expansion since of Cafe life, vineyards and new housing going on all
around the area outside the town. His video work was very steady and a great
effort on commentary also.
Guest Speaker was Keith Henderson, who has been involved with ships and
boats of the Otago harbour for much of his life...archival footage from O.A.M.M.
files was shown, and Keith, ably assisted by John Armstrong was able to recall
many interesting and often significant details about boats and scenes of racing
during the era of power boating in the 1950’s. Many scenes of visiting Naval
vessels of the time were also spoken on, and the films gave a good insight into
Otago Harbour life over half a century ago. This very well received talk was
recorded for archiving.
Workshop Session 5...understanding digital video formats. Peter Begg gave
out a well put together document summarising some of the differences in
formatting and the effects and uses of them, whilst speaking briefly on the
Subject. Time was a little against going into the detail necessary, as this
subject can be a complex one for those wanting to delve into it, so it was
suggested that it was a good candidate for use on a separate enthusiasts night
for those keenly interested in future. Our average hobby movie makers need not
concern themselves too much as the editing process helps to sort
formatting out automatically.
Finally a little celebration was held to commemorate life member Frank
Weedon’s 90th Birthday. He has contributed years of hard work to the club, was
president 1992 to 1995, and played a key role in the production of the 1998
Sesquicentenary documentary DVD..of which we have distributed a large number
since. He is still an active member of the committee. A birthday cake was cut in
his honour and shared for Supper.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK...from all the
membership.
Meeting closed around 9.35 pm for supper.
