Another Well attended meeting. The September meeting’s main focus was
our ‘Own Choice Film Evening’. This gave all members the freedom to bring along
some old Gold videos they may have tucked away, to screen without the need for
competition entry. Over recent years this has proved a popular evening...and
this evening we received five great films.
1. Wynot Films: (Andrew Wylie) Rescreening of the grand
opening night for "Reel Gold’’...In 1999 an exhibition of early film making with
displays of film equipment and screenings of old films some significantly
historic, was held in the Early Settlers Museum. O.A.M.M. were a key element of
this exhibition, and this film showed many past and present members (who were
looking a little younger it must be said) as well as the official opening by
Mayor Sukhi Turner.
2. Full Moon Video: (Wilma Deen) A real classic and
beautifully put together holiday video of visits to both Franz Joseph, and
Tasman Glaciers in both the late 1980’s and mid 2000’s. It highlighted the
freedom to walk at the glacier face and also the vast differences from then to
now in respect of the Safety equipment used by the guides...worthy of
archiving!
3. Murray Elston Video: In 1994 a sequence was taken of a
stoat taking it’s dinner (a whole rabbit it had caught....up a tree to take it
to it’s den. The rabbit was as big and almost as heavy as the stoat...but this
silent film showed the tenacious and determined effort of the stoat which
succeeded in the end., despite the rabbit carcase getting caught in a fork
between two branches. The chances of obtaining this on film would be extremely
small even today...this makes this a very special little film.
P.A.B Productions: Peter Begg gave a short talk on his
recent trip overnighting in Doubtful sound...a film comprising his favourite
digital still photos set to suitably chosen music was shown. This summed
up the trip in two sections...the journey to Manapouri and over Wilmot Pass,
then the shots of stunning ‘Shadow Land’, Doubtful sound...including reflections
in Hall Arm, the shadows contrasted with different light hues both at sunset
over the Tasman Sea and also Sunrise the next day as the sun slowly rose to
shine on the snowy tops before the fiord itself...making for great photo
opportunities.
Warren Knox’s DVD unfortunately failed to work due to a technical
Glitch and will be shown at a later meeting.
A workshop on ‘The Role of Music in film’ was then presented by Peter
Begg and Gio Angelo...this is a subject much more important than we assume.
Music well chosen and properly used can greatly enhance your work, or almost
ruin it.He circulated a hand out, showing 11 reasons why you would use music in
the soundtrack...together with a number of outlined examples of different
situations involving choice of music and the effect you are aiming for. Gio
Angelo demonstrated a short sequence of film four times with different music
Genres, and he discussed the changing emphasis these gave. He also informed the
members with screened images, how to obtain royalty free music.
The session was well received by all.
John Armstrong then updated the great progress made on archiving, and
talked also about the play "Farley's Arcade" partly held in the old Otago Cine Club's theatrette.
The meeting Closed at 9.20 pm with a supper as usual.
